The Bureau is a not-for-profit organization that pursues public interest journalism and education as a matter of key concern. To support and underwrite its early years the Bureau received pledges of £2m from David and Elaine Potter.
The charitable part of the funding has been provided by the David and Elaine Potter Foundation with other funding contributed directly by the Potters.
Editorial independence is guaranteed by our constitution. The Editor of the Bureau’s decision is final and independent of any influence from our funders.
The Bureau has received charitable funding from The Green Park Foundation, Stamp Out Poverty and Oxfam. Again editorial independence was exercised in all of these cases.
The Bureau has developed commercial relationships with leading media and other organisations in the UK and internationally. This has meant the Bureau has had commercial dealings with Channel 4, ITN, the BBC, Al Jazeera Arabic, Al Jazeera English, the Daily Telegraph, Journeyman Pictures, Le Monde, the Financial Times and the British Medical Journal.
In collaborative commercial media partnerships, editorial decisions are shared according to circumstances. For instance, BBC Newsnight’s collaborations with the Bureau means that final editorial approval for output on the BBC resides with the editor of Newsnight.
All monies from this has gone towards core and project funding. Any profits have been reinvested back into the Bureau’s work.
