Role: Audience Producer, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism
Contract: Full-time (initial 12 months, with potential for extension)
Location: Hybrid/Home based, with regular visits to London office
Salary: circa £27,000 -30,000 dependent on experience

Could you transform a 5,000 word long-read on illegal beef farming in the Amazon into an informative Twitter thread? How about filming and editing a social video explainer on global corruption in the City of London? Or designing a bold infographic using a complex set of data from a Big Tobacco investigation?

This brand new role will be essential in the Bureau’s drive to connect with audiences, in doing so supporting our freshly formed audience team to publish award-winning investigations in innovative ways.

Working with our Audience & Engagement Lead, the Audience Producer will deliver the Bureau’s journalism to our growing direct audience through a wide variety of channels and platforms.

From social media, to newsletters, audio, video and events, you will play an integral part in all of it. Not only that, but you’ll also help to bring the voice of our audience directly into the Bureau, and support the audience team in communicating the needs of the people who read our work to the project teams.

An ability to create engaging content for diverse audiences is more important than previous experience in journalism for this role, so please consider applying even if you have not worked in the news industry before.

Responsibilities

  • Writing audience-facing copy: Producing copy for newsletters, social and other audience products, matching the tone and style of the Bureau.

  • Video & audio production: Working with Audience & Engagement Lead on production of video and audio content (eg shooting, recording, editing, distribution) for use on social platforms and the Bureau’s website.

  • Newsletter production and distribution: Coordinating the assembly of copy and assets for weekly and special edition newsletters; sending newsletters to relevant lists and segments.

  • Social assets creation: Sourcing and/or creating photos/graphics for use across social channels and explainers.

  • Community management: Managing newsroom inbox by responding to audience queries; working with Audience & Engagement Lead on execution of audience surveys.

  • Events planning/organising: Sourcing speakers, coordinating venues. Supporting Audience & Engagement Lead to set up digital infrastructure for virtual events.

  • New formats research and testing: Working with Audience & Engagement Lead to research and plan the launch of new formats and channels (e.g. TikTok, IG Reels) in line with the Bureau’s direct audience strategy.

You would be a good fit for this role if you have*:

  • A deep understanding of the power of socials to reach new audiences and start new conversations about stories that matter.

  • A passion for journalism that makes a difference and a commitment to the highest standards of journalistic accuracy and ethics.

  • Strong communication and organisational skills, with an ability to work with colleagues across a number of teams, including audience, editorial, and production.

  • Experience in:
    • Getting to grips with complex content quickly and using it to create excellent written copy for newsletters and/or socials in line with organisational style.

    • Posting to and managing social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. Experience with social listening tools would be a bonus.

    • Knowledge of social media trends and best practices for organic and paid posts.

    • Shooting, recording, and editing video/audio for use on social platforms. Experience using Premiere Pro would be a bonus.

    • Using MailChimp to create, schedule, and tailor campaigns for a variety of people and purposes.

    • A working knowledge of digital graphic design to create social assets. Experience using Photoshop and/or Canva would be a bonus.

    • Familiarity with user experience and SEO content strategies.
