Keeping a check on the government's use of counter-terrorism powers.

Latest from this investigation

The government has increased its powers in its fight against extremism. In this project the Bureau tracks the use of these powers.

This investigation includes the Bureau’s work on citizenship stripping which has revealed how a little-known power allows the government to strip dual nationals and naturalised persons of their British citizenship if the Home Secretary deems it ‘conducive to the public good’.

Since 2006, 27 people have lost their citizenship on national security grounds; 24 of these were under the last Coalition government. What has become of many of these individuals is unknown.
