Promoting Journalism: Bureau nominated for IRE award

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism together with the Financial Times was a finalist for the prestigious Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) award, 2010.

The team was nominated in the Partnership/Collaboration category for their investigation into the misuse of European Structural funds.

The study of the European Union’s spending practices found that that less than 10% of allotted funding reached the beneficiaries of Structural Fund projects. The stories also examined how it is nearly impossible for taxpayers to see how their money is being spent.

The annual IRE Awards recognise outstanding investigative work in several categories. The contest also helps identify the techniques and resources used to complete each story.

Others in the category include the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists with the BBC, the School of Communication at American University, ProPublica, Spot.Us and the US’s National Public Radio.
