Our fellows, past and present

The Bureau has been running a fellowship programme across the organisation since 2016. Our fellows have gone on to produce award-winning journalism and work for media organisations across the UK.

Alexandra Heal
(Google News Lab) 2018

Following her fellowship with TBIJ, Alex went on to become a full-time reporter for TBIJ's environment strand. Her reporting on domestic abuse by police officers won the Private Eye Paul Foot Award 2020 and led to lawyers submitting a nationwide "super-complaint" with police regulators. Alex is now a reporter at the Financial Times, on the paper's visual storytelling team.

Charlotte Maher
(Quadrature scholarship fellow) 2019

Since 2023, Charlotte is a lead social media producer for investigative collective, Bellingcat. Whilst at TBIJ Charlotte worked on investigations into homelessness as part of the Bureau Local's "Locked Out" project where she exposed a loophole in Welsh homeless legislation. She also contributed reporting and research to the Global Health team's tobacco strand. Following her time at TBIJ Charlotte joined the BBC to work on regional investigations for their documentary department. She then joined Seen.tv as a lead producer and later head of innovation, training and community. Charlotte holds an MA in Investigative Journalism from City, University of London.

Bethan John
(Google News Lab) 2019

After completing her fellowship with TBIJ, Bethan joined First Draft, an organisation that investigates social media disinformation. She is now a news reporter at Global Data Review, covering topics including adtech, AI and privacy. She holds a MSc in Digital Journalism from Goldsmiths College.

Nimra Shahid
(Google News Lab) 2020

Following her fellowship at TBIJ, where she focused on data journalism, Nimra went on to cover markets and litigation for Bloomberg News. She then established herself as an award-winning journalist and investigator at Global Witness, specialising in commodities, deforestation and finance, before rejoining TBIJ as a green finance reporter on the Environment team in 2023.

Sarah Haque
2021

Sarah Haque joined TBIJ as a fellow and then a freelance reporter in 2021. Her work for TBIJ was published in the Financial Times Weekend Magazine, The Telegraph, The Independent and The Times – as well as landing her two shortlist nominations for the British Journalism Awards. She has also written for The Guardian, British Vogue, ELLE U.K., VICE, and WIRED U.K. Sarah primarily writes longform narrative and investigative features and has extensively covered violence against women. She is currently studying a Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Oxford, and hopes to eventually write a novel.

Misbah Khan
(Aziz Foundation) 2022

Misbah Khan was TBIJ’s 2022 Aziz Fellow and is now a reporter in the Environment team working on our antimicrobial resistance project. Previously she worked as an investigative journalist and researcher on documentaries for ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5. She holds a BSc in Biomedical Sciences from QMUL and an MA in Near and Middle Eastern Studies from SOAS. She is a co-founder of Identity International, a platform committed to providing critical, in-depth perspective on minority issues.

Hajar Meddah
(Aziz Foundation) 2023

Hajar is TBIJ’s 2023 Aziz Fellow, working on investigations across several teams. She has previously worked as a documentary researcher, market research analyst and copywriter. She read Arabic and Persian at the University of Oxford and enjoys reviewing plays and novels.

Meriem Mahdhi
(Aziz Foundation) 2023

Meriem has previously reported from Italy as a freelancer for VICE World News. She has experience working as a digital investigations analyst with a special focus on disinformation and influence operations in North Africa. Prior to that she interned with the Observer's news desk. Her work and interests focus on the intersection of migration, labour exploitation, housing and homelessness.
