Bureau Recommends: Councils fail to collect £500m in council tax

The Bureau Recommends: An investigation by the London Evening Standard which reveals that London councils are owed more than half a billion pounds in unpaid council tax.

Last years bill alone amounts to £117m : enough to pay the cost of the Olympic stadium.

The article states that the rate of non-payment in London is between one and four per cent of all those liable to pay. Unpaid council tax means that councils make up the shortfall either by taxing their conscientious council taxpayers more or by cutting services.
