The Bureau Recommends: Bahraini doctor’s allegations of abuse

The Bureau recommends an investigation by the BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, which tracked down one of 20 doctors put on trial in Bahrain after treating anti-government protesters.

The doctor has been released on bail after spending three months in detention.

He alleged that he had been blindfolded and beaten as interrogators tried to force him to confess to killing and injuring patients in order to portray the Bahraini government in a bad light.

He claims to have been beaten with a rubber hose or cable, hit with a metal pole, hit him over the head and frequently abused verbally.

The doctor’s identity is concealed for his protection.

After the March demonstrations 48 doctors were arrested, 20 are still facing trial.
