Bureau Recommends: Ex-CIA operative reveals secret prison

The Bureau recommends an interview by Wired.com which reveals the existence of a secret CIA prison in the Middle East, where terrorism suspects are subjected to extreme forms of interrogation in an attempt to force them to divulge sensitive information.

The site, known as ‘Hotel California’, is described as a ‘discreetly guarded, unremarkable’ facility in an unnamed former Soviet state.

In the interview, former CIA operative Glenn Carle discusses his experience of attempting to extract information from a high-value target, codenamed CAPTUS, over the course of ten days. Individuals held at Hotel California were subjected to a series of attempts to psychologically disorientate them, including blasting heavy metal music into detainees’ cells in order to disrupt natural sleep patterns.

Over the course of the interrogation, Carle came to believe that CAPTUS was neither a terrorist nor a dangerous individual, and began to question whether or not he was a torturer.

CAPTUS was eventually released without charge after eight years. The CIA declined to comment on Wired.com’s story.
