Bureau Recommends: £5bn worth of MOD equipment lost

The Bureau recommends a report by Radio 4 detailing how the Ministry of Defence lost track of over £5bn worth of equipment.

Missing items are reported to include military hardware such as guns, firearms and communications equipment.

The investigation shows the problems caused by the use of a 30-year-old information technology infrastructure.

Research also describes how some 277 different software systems are in use by 50 contractors in 15 separate locations.

The programme builds on a damning report published in March by the National Audit Office, which condemned the MOD for its consistent failure to keep tabs on expensive gear.

UK forces are currently facing cuts likely to lead to the smallest army for over a century.
