Bureau Recommends: Thailand Under Fire

The Bureau recommends a new investigative documentary by BBC’s This World programme, which reveals new claims of corruption in Thailand’s prosecution over  last year’s violence.

More than ninety people were killed in bloody clashes in central Bangkok between demonstrators and the army.  No-one from the military or politics has ever been held accountable for the deaths of individuals including medical staff and news personnel.

Reporter Fergal Keane, reveals new claims of cover up and impunity in the murky world of Thai political power.

In interviews with two opposition Redshirt members working undercover inside the Department of Special Investigation – the official government body responsible for bringing to justice those responsible for the killings – it was claimed:

‘We were asked to say that we did not know who did it.  We believe that the deaths were caused by soldiers firing their guns but as a result the director of the DSI tried to dig himself out of this conclusion’

‘After we concluded an early case that soldiers were responsible for the killings, over cases were blocked.‘

In the light of such testimony, it is questionable whether the newly elected leader of Thailand, Yingluck Shinawatra, will be able to live up to her promises to bring to justice the perpetrators of the killings .
