Bureau Recommends: Gerry and the GPs

As MPs debate the biggest NHS reform package in its history this week, the Bureau recommends a Panorama special report investigating the potential effects of the bill.

Businessman and troubleshooter Gerry Robinson toured the country gauging opinion from staff and patients.

He uncovers uncertainty from GPs about their ability to take over control of NHS budgets from PCTs.

There is also disquiet amongst staff as to how the nature of the reform has been communicated by the government.

And he finds out that change has already started with the closure of many Primary Care Trusts.

Nick Clegg is facing criticism from certain Liberal Democrat MPs who are vowing to oppose the bill.

In April the Government was forced to announce a pause to the planned changes amid widespread anger over the reforms among NHS professionals and patient groups.

Research by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism over the last year has also unearthed serious concerns about NHS privatisation.
