Peer asked Gaddafi’s son for ‘advice’ on £1m fee
The Bureau recommends a story in the Sunday Times about how a senior Conservative peer asked Colonel Gaddafi’s son for help in recovering £1m in fees for attempts to free Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, the Lockerbie bomber.
The newspaper found a copy of a letter written in 2007 on House of Lords notepaper from Lord Trefgarne to Saif al-Islam asking for ‘advice’ on the payment, owed to him and Professor Robert Black QC for work over ‘a considerable number of years’.
Lord Trefgarne repeatedly pressed the Scottish government for al-Megrahi’s release as the chair of the Libyan British Business Council. One month before al-Megrahi was freed in 2009, Lord Trefgarne wrote to the Scottish Justice Secretary warning that if al-Megrahi remained in jail UK-Libya relations would suffer.
The letter was found in a farmhouse owned by Saif on the outskirts of Tripoli.
