Bureau Recommends: Coroners under scrutiny

The Bureau recommends a BBC Radio 4 documentary examining how coroner’s inquests are conducted across England and Wales.

The File on Four programme focuses on the stark variation in how coroners behave and how thorough their investigations are.

The piece includes emotive interviews with families who are unhappy with the verdicts on the deaths of their loved ones, but have little recourse to appeal.

Particular attention is given to cases of deaths in hospital. The programme found that often hospitals are allowed to put forward their own witnesses, and sometime key evidence is not considered.
